I think I jinxed us by bringing in Christmas cards and treats to hospital yesterday, we were meant to avoid this place this holiday!!
Freddie started coughing yesterday and, surprise surprise, tonight we’re in CAU (insert appropriate sad/upset/gutted emoji here). We thought he’d had a seizure which is different to his usual and were concerned, but we have been reliably informed it’s likely to be something that happens to the body in an attempt to shake loose a fever. After being checked we’re told, as well as a temperature, Freddie’s ears and throat are red, he has wheezing on both lungs and light crackling which indicates the beginnings of an infection. He’s been prescribed antibiotics for five days and will need his inhaler every four hours for the next four days. Yes, that means twenty four hours a day. His next one is due at 2:30am – and we probably won’t get home much before 1am. I was purposely trying to get an early night before we ended up here as I was struggling to keep my eyes open. I’m not sure how I’ll function through Christmas on the new four hourly rota.
It upsets me how quickly things escalate for Freddie. I know he doesn’t have a full on chest infection (yet) but if we hadn’t suspected a seizure we wouldn’t be here and by tomorrow morning he easily could’ve, he could’ve gone downhill overnight. A few weeks ago, when he had tonsillitis and a chest infection, he’d only been sneezing/coughing for less than 24 hours. I seem to forget (until the next time) how quickly things change.
Anyway, it’s always nice to be greeted with a hug and a kiss by a consultant we know, makes it feel more like we’re visiting friends than in hospital. The rest of our week is on hold, Freddie comes first and some rest and relaxation is definitely in order. Plus sleep, hopefully he’ll want lots and lots of sleep!!
