Which is why I’m so slow at posting these days. I’m sorry.
The last week or so seems to be a haze but there’s been a few good things to report, firstly, Freddie can feed himself blueberries and chopped grapes. This. Is. Huge. He doesn’t have his pincer grip but he’s figured out how to get them between his thumb and forefinger and holds his head forward to get his hand to his mouth before he drops it. The sad part is that if he drops it a couple of times, he gets frustrated then starts banging his head backwards. The good part is he’s getting better and, his frustration, indicates he’s cognitively more advanced. We were told at his clinical diagnosis appointment that is the hope with special needs children, as it’s what drives them forward and motivates them. So unbelievably proud of him.
Secondly, I took him to Stepping Stones Learn and Play in Colchester yesterday morning (Tuesday) for playgroup. It was nice and he loves their sensory area. I chatted with one of the volunteers and I’ve put Freddie’s name on the list to attend two days a week – once he’s two. I didn’t know, but if you have a clinical diagnosis the nursery can apply for funding for the child. We won’t know until June time whether he can have a place from September. It appears it’s quite a jigsaw puzzle in terms of children with additional needs moving forward a year and whether there’s places for them in schools when they turn five. Either way his name is on the list so he’ll get a place at some point and we’re going to go to the playgroup every Tuesday so the environment becomes familiar to him.
